I’m currently working with the University of Michigan’s Michigan Target Research & Fabrication (MiTRF) to restructure their documentation practices and public engagement. MiTRF designs and fabricates the laser-driven targets that are critical for the success of a variety of high-energy-density physics experiments. Right now, I'm photographing their existing targets and components, creating engaging and informative visual references that can be used in academic papers and outreach. I'm also going to build a new interactive website for MiTRF using 3D models of the targets. Through this, I’ve learned a lot about macrophotography and handling extremely tiny, fragile components. Trying to highlight the microscopic intricacies of these targets while also creating captivating images has definitely challenged me as an artist. I find that projects like this really push my creative abilities and teach me new means of storytelling and expression.
